Do I Need a Cell Phone Case?

Your cellphone probably cost you nothing out of pocket. So you may not think of how much you have invested in it. But you do have a lot invested in it.

You may have got the phone for free by signing a multi-year contract. But what happens if you break the phone? Chances are, you’re responsible for paying for it. That could be anywhere from $200 to $1500 or more, depending on the make and model.

Add on to that the value of the information you have on that phone. For some, it’s just names and addresses. For others, they may have all their business information on it. Who knows what that would be worth?

So the answer is yes. You do need a cell phone case. You do need to protect that phone from the accidental fall. You need to protect the screen from breaking. Now the questions are, “What case should I get? What screen protector should I use?”

I recommend staying away from the cosmetic phone cases. The only protection they provide is against scratches on the phone’s back. Look for something that is made of silicon, or silicon and hard plastic. Look for a case that has covers for the different ports on your phone. These kinds of cases offer good to great drop protection and extra protection from splashes and spills.

Some good brands to look at include Otterbox, LifeProof, and Griffin.

To protect the screen, I highly recommend anything made with Gorilla Glass. Many smartphones already have a screen made with Gorilla Glass, but even it can be scratched. Sand from the beach, or skidding across concrete or gravel will scratch it. So why not spend a few dollars more on a Gorilla Glass screen protector?

For as little as $40, you can ensure that your phone will outlast your contract. That’s pretty cheap insurance. Happy computing!
